2015 US Open- Day 4 Men’s Picks

Day 4 action takes place today, with the men on the bottom half of the draw looking to reach the 3rd round. With many intriguing matches taking place and with many big names in action, it should be exciting- here are three of my predictions!

Bernard Tomic vs Lleyton Hewitt

A very interesting all Australian battle takes place today as the young 24th seed Bernard Tomic faces Lleyton Hewitt, who is playing at the US Open for the last time. Hewitt was leading by two sets to love when his opponent, Aleksandr Nedovyesov, retired whilst Bernard Tomic had to come from a set down against Damir Dzumhur on tuesday. The two have never played each other, but will know each other well and will probably know how they both play. Tomic has had a very good year, defending his title in Bogota, and has risen from outside the top 70 to just outside the top 20. The younger Australian should win this one due to his extra match practice, but Hewitt will bring his usual fight to this one.

Prediction: Tomic in 5

Adrian Mannarino vs Andy Murray

Andy Murray continues his campaign for a 3rd grand slam title is he faces Adrian Mannarino 3rd on Arthur Ashe Stadium. 3rd seed Murray didn’t have the easiest opening match against Nick Kyrgios but eventually saw off the Australian in 4 sets whilst Mannarino, who just missed out on being a seed here, eased past Konstantin Kravchuk in 3 sets on Tuesday. There is no doubt that Andy Murray is the favourite for this match and he eased past Mannarino for the loss of just 6 games at Indian Wells earlier this year- their only previous meeting. If Mannarino plays exceptionally well and Murray is in poor form the Frenchman has a chance, though this seems unlikely and Murray should move on with relative ease here.

Prediction: Murray in 3

John Isner vs Mikhail Youzhny

13th seed John Isner may not have the easiest 2nd round match as he faces the veteran Mikhail Youzhny later today. Isner was on very good form on tuesday, not facing a break point and conceding just 9 games to Malek Jaziri. Youzhny, who has slipped down the rankings due to injuries, had a more difficult match on tuesday but was able to see off John-Patrick Smith in 4 sets. Youzhny leads the head to head 2-0 and their last meeting was a 4 sets win for the Russian at this tournament, though that was back in 2010 and Isner in much better form than Youzhny at the moment. If he serves well and plays like he did against Jaziri, Isner should be comfortable today.

Prediction: Isner in 3
